The Design Mechanics

Their unique selling point is that they have a set price list that does not change per service. A client scope is done at an early stage by a sales representitive so the client never meets the designer. This is a much easier this way as they have the same design knowledge as the client. I have also learnt that although some can be difficult it is the client we are designing for at the end of the day.

According to Dave Pannell in order to gain employment a good portfolio is necessary.

As most people have said, a good portfolio is important, Chris. Do you think that this should include your own ‘corporate identity’? I certainly do, and will hopefully be something we will put together when we make our own portfolio site. This would certainly say to me ‘professional’ if I was an employer.

I thought it would be obvious that a Business Card is needed at least. I don't think we'll do this in the portfolio assignment as I think its focusing more on the online aspect.

Even if it's not needed in the assignment, having a good corporate identity with your website is a great way of making yourself look professional.

Yes I think that the more commercial work/corporate identity stuff we have the better. It seemed to me that Dave was much more interested in this compared to the more creative stuff.

I think our portfolio work is going to be a great selling point to win over employers. I also think the design mechanics way of getting 25% off the client before work is completed, is a good way to make sure you are not wasting your time on a client that is not going to pay or is messing you around.

I agree with you Rich a deposit would be a good way of securing the job but I think I would probably take a smaller deposit e.g. 20%.

The portfolio would be a good selling point and I wonder if it would be allowed to put external work on before we leave college or would it be an after finish college update.

@Ben: I think the Corporate ID would make us a lot more professional against a design company that doesn't. I hope to take a lot of care into mine if I ever go freelance. I don't want to just pick the first idea after a days designing. I really want to create a good online and offline presence as I think this is essential.

You undoubtedly need your own corporate identity, so that you can bring all your work together into one cohesive whole.
