Goals for Portfolio Site

1. Create a Portfolio website using Standards Compliant XHTML 1.0 Strict & CSS1
Using standards compliant XHTML 1.0 Strict create a Portfolio that can be viewed in all browsers.

Using standards compliant CSS will aid in keeping presentation and information separate which will result in faster download of the portfolio.

2. Create a Portfolio which appeals to the Target Audience
This can be measured by either adding a "Did you find this website appealing? Yes or No Button" and view the findings. If the majority say yes than it is a success. Post the website on design forums and note down the results again if the general consensus is yes then the goal has been accomplished.

3. To implement an effective navigation system
In order to have an effective portfolio the user must be able to navigate around with out "getting lost". This may then keep the user on the site longer as they are not getting irritated by poor navigation. Another point to be taken into this will be the 3 click rule. With this in place a user will not have to click through endless pages to find the information they desire.

4. To gain higher Search Engine Rankings
Will look into ways of attaining a higher search engine result. This would in turn allow more prospective employers to see our work. To ensure that I could make this attainable is to launch the website a few weeks early and then check the website after a set number of days to see if the Portfolio has climbed the ladder.

CSS what?

Isn't XHTML and CSS a given now? I don't think it should be one of your goals, and you could try to think of something a bit more challenging.

As for the search engines one, I think you need to be a bit more specific. You haven't specified which search engines will be important, or any methods you may use.

Not sure if you've changed your post since Steve's reply, if you have it's still incorrect.

As for adding to Craig's point I think you should say what you search for to find your website as a bench mark.

Typing Chris Towell may place you in the top 100 but typing Chris Towell Web Design may place you in the top 10 without actually doing anything to your site.

@Craig A - Why is it still incorrect? You've posted it is incorrect but you haven't said why!

@Craig B - It may be a given but it is still an attainable, measureable goal. It isn't easy thinking of goals that are measurable, as for example "To make a pretty website" or "To make an effective portfolio" as this isn't valid goal anymore.

I was waiting to see if you knew why it was incorrect. After John's lectures on CSS then it shouldn't be too hard to work out.

CSS Level...

Most times people say where the error is though instead of saying "You've made a mistake". It's like saying your works crap but not saying why...

Steve said 'CSS what?'. I said I didn't know if you'd changed your post after Steve's comment as it's still incorrect.

Surely that implies I am refering to the same thing as Steve?

I had changed it though!

How will you measure goal 3? You have mentioned the 3 click rule, but if your site has a relatively small amount of content, (which I suspect it will) this may be a given from the start.

I think that goal 4 will need to more specific - higher search engine ranking than what? Surely by virtue of it having more content on it than it currently does, this will also happen naturally.

No.2 - You haven't told us who your target audience is? Is it potential employers or prospective clients?

I don't wish to be negative but what if the results state that the site is not deemed appealing? Will this mean the goal has not been met?

With only two options for the user, you are limiting the depth of feedback you will receive.

Maybe a comments box would be useful to give you more in depth feedback.

I completely agree with your 3rd goal and it is one that no one else has mentioned. It is very important to keep a user on the site as long as possible in our portfolio because if a potential client or employer click on the first assignments and sees very basic websites they could click off without seeing the progression we have all made. So the three click rule would be very important and this could be mentioned in the actual title of this goal.
